Humanistic at heart, transdisciplinary in practice

Professor Daniel W.L. Lai, Fung Hon Chu Endowed Professor in Humanics

“Humanics is fundamentally about people. We seek to understand ‘humanity’ through transdisciplinary research and diverse perspectives, thereby developing innovative approaches to meet societal needs and enhance overall human well-being,” Professor Daniel W.L. Lai, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), succinctly articulates this academic vision. This passion for humanistic values forms the foundation of his appointment as the Fung Hon Chu Endowed Professor in Humanics, an honour that also entrusts him with a vital mission: to help HKBU deepen its founding ethos by nurturing a new generation of young leaders who are perceptive, compassionate, and ready to shoulder responsibility.

		Advancing holistic education through diversity
For 70 years since its establishment, HKBU has upheld its core mission of whole-person education. In an era marked by the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and increasingly complex global challenges, Professor Lai believes this philosophy is not outdated but, if anything, has become more relevant than ever. Social issues such as climate change, ageing populations and public health crises are closely interlinked and cannot be addressed by knowledge provided by just a single discipline. HKBU’s whole-person education, therefore, not only emphasises transdisciplinary learning but also prioritises students’ personal growth, their literary and logical thinking, and character development. Through diverse learning experiences, it broadens students’ horizons, enabling graduates to apply their knowledge flexibly across a variety of fields, fulfil their potential, and establish themselves on the global stage.

Professor Lai adds that transdisciplinary training helps students expand and consolidate their knowledge, thereby honing their creative thinking, independent reasoning, and problem-solving skills to prepare for an unpredictable future. He particularly encourages young people to engage in community service and volunteer work as a means of gaining invaluable insights into society from multiple perspectives. These service-learning activities not only enhance individual capabilities but also build social skills and a strong sense of responsibility, proving highly beneficial for future career development.

“Although many young people focus solely on their studies to pave the way for employment,” Professor Lai remarks, “I believe that if we can guide them to step outside their own circles, interact with different groups in society, and understand others’ circumstances and difficulties, they will naturally become eager to contribute to building a better society.

Roots in social work nurture humanistic convictions
Professor Lai’s educational philosophy is inseparable from his career beginnings. Before entering higher education, he worked as a social worker specialising in family support and long-term care. “During my frontline service days, I learned to approach things from a human perspective, respecting and understanding the needs of every individual I encountered.” This experience profoundly shaped his academic direction and leadership philosophy over the subsequent 30-plus years. Whether in teaching, research, or faculty leadership, he has consistently grounded his work in humanistic care.

Holding fast to this original commitment, Professor Lai’s professional horizons gradually expanded internationally. After completing postgraduate studies in Canada, he held positions such as Associate Professor, Professor, and Associate Dean at Grant MacEwan University, the University of British Columbia Okanagan, and the University of Calgary. Hence, he accumulated extensive teaching and administrative experience as well as gaining exposure to cutting-edge global scholarship. In 2015, he returned to Hong Kong to serve as Head of the Department of Applied Social Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and in 2020 joined HKBU as Dean of the then Faculty of Social Sciences, continuing to bring his professional impact to bear on a broader platform.

Glorious honours and unwavering commitment to the vulnerable
Professor Lai’s outstanding scholarly achievements are widely recognised. He has been consistently named among Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists and, in 2025, ranked 83rd globally and 2nd in China for citation impact in gerontology. That same year, he received the Award for Contribution to Gerontology from the Canadian Association on Gerontology, underscoring his leadership in gerontology, healthy ageing, and public health.

Beyond these honours, Professor Lai’s research remains focused on marginalised communities such as older adults, immigrants, ethnic minorities and family caregivers, exploring how social, cultural and environmental factors influence their health and well-being. To date, he has published more than 170 peer-reviewed articles and secured more than HK$58 million in research funding from esteemed bodies including the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He has also contributed to research projects totalling around HK$87 million, promoting community-based strategies that blend humanistic values with technological innovation to improve the lives of vulnerable populations.

Transdisciplinary practice: bringing knowledge into reality
In teaching, Professor Lai emphasises the equal importance of theory and practice. He guides students in employing diverse research methods and, through case studies and group collaboration, cultivates critical thinking and empathy. A strong advocate of inter-generational learning, he maintains that the varied and complex needs of different groups deserve proper attention and response. “Older adults need not just medical care or housing, they also long for human connections, particularly interactions with younger generations,” he explains. “Likewise, university students, as they focus on building their futures, can draw wisdom from others. Through intergenerational exchange, they learn to respect and appreciate different generations, which in turn nurtures their personal growth.”

To extend the power of knowledge beyond the campus, Professor Lai actively embraces cross-media and cross-disciplinary approaches. In one notable example, he collaborated with Dr. Sobel Chan, former Senior Lecturer at HKBU’s Academy of Film, to produce the short film We Are Hong Kongers. This film uses cinematic narrative to portray the daily challenges faced by retired South Asian Hongkongers and the support they receive from their families and social networks. The film aims to raise public awareness of the situations facing ethnic minority elders and calls for greater societal support for them.

Serving the community through policy engagement
Beyond teaching and research, Professor Lai enthusiastically contributes to public policy. He serves as a member of the HKSAR Government’s Elderly Commission and as Vice-President of the Hong Kong Association of Gerontology, participating in the formulation and review of ageing-related policies to promote elderly health and social harmony.

Professor Miu Chung Yan, who previously worked with Professor Lai and now teaches at the University of British Columbia’s School of Social Work in Canada, praises Professor Lai’s vision and expertise in incorporating emerging technologies into social services. This combination is crucial for addressing contemporary human needs.

Leading innovation across arts and social sciences
To align with HKBU’s transdisciplinary reforms, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences merged in 2024 to form the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, with Professor Lai appointed as its inaugural Dean. He anticipates that this merger will generate strong synergies that drive academic excellence and innovation. “Scholars in our Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences possess broad expertise. When collaborating, we revolve around a common core: enhancing people’s understanding and awareness of issues related to humanity and society. With this guiding principle, we can propel more impactful research.”

Under Professor Lai’s leadership, the Faculty is diligently expanding its international footprint. Key efforts include promoting transdisciplinary dialogues with prestigious universities worldwide and bringing together leading academics to examine how AI intersects with the humanities. In 2025, the Faculty partnered with the Chinese Institute of Hong Kong of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the HKBU Shenzhen Research Institute to establish the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Base (Shenzhen), fostering cross-border academic collaboration in the Greater Bay Area.

		Translating generosity into global opportunities
Advancing research to enhance human well-being is a long and arduous pursuit that relies on financial backing. Professor Lai expresses his deep gratitude to the Fung Hon Chu Foundation for establishing the Endowed Professorship in Humanics at HKBU. He notes that this donation not only facilitates his own research development but also benefits students. He plans to allocate part of the funds to support students in undertaking local and international research, participating in global conferences and publishing their findings, enabling the world to recognise the potential of HKBU students.

With his profound professional background and humanistic compassion, Professor Lai has made significant contributions to social sciences education in Hong Kong and globally. Whether in intergenerational, cross-media or transdisciplinary domains, his teaching and research embody a steadfast commitment to promoting social inclusion, driving academic innovation, and serving the community. His vision extends beyond academic excellence; it is about building a better society where everyone can find their place and value in a diverse world.

*This interview was published in Feburary 2026.

The event explored through the lens of the humanities how AI is shaping the future of society

Driven by a profound interest in nutritional sciences and obesity-associated diseases, Professor Kwan is committed to advancing our understanding of the root causes and the underlying mechanisms linking these conditions. Her work focuses on translational research which develops novel therapeutic strategies for obesity, and related comorbidities. She also investigates the therapeutic potential of herbal extracts and compounds with potent anti-obesity effects, integrating the insights obtained from both Chinese medicine and modern biomedical science.

Building on this foundation, Professor Kwan’s translational research addresses the limited efficacy of current therapeutic strategies for obesity-associated diseases through a dual approach: first, by elucidating novel mechanisms underlying disease progression to inform the development of more effective interventions; and second, by targeting the excess accumulation of adipose tissue, the fundamental cause of these diseases. These approaches investigate Chinese medicine herbal extracts and compounds with promising anti-obesity properties, as well as explore advanced exosome-based delivery systems to enhance the efficacy. In addition, Professor Kwan develops innovative, natural, and non-toxic herbal health supplements for weight management, embodying the philosophy of “food and medicine homology”. These efforts significantly contribute to the industrialisation of Chinese medicine products. Throughout her career, Professor Kwan has actively collaborated with research teams across Chinese and Western medicine as well as diverse scientific disciplines in Hong Kong and abroad. Her leadership has fostered vibrant interdisciplinary exchange and driven the integration of Chinese medicine approaches into contemporary biomedical research.

Professor Kwan’s distinguished contributions to translational research are evidenced by her authorship of more than 120 peer-reviewed publications, including research articles, review papers, editorials, and book chapters in the fields of obesity, oncology, nutrition, and vascular biology. These have appeared in highly respected international journals such as Nature Communications, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), Circulation Research and Cell. Her outstanding achievements have earned her international recognition, including being named by Stanford University among the World's Top 2% Scientists. She also received the Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award in 2020 and the HKBU School Performance Award for Young Researcher in 2019. On the research funding front, Professor Kwan has demonstrated remarkable success in securing competitive funding from both internal and external sources. Notably, she has obtained support from the Chinese Medicine Development Fund to promote Chinese medicine education among local primary and secondary school students.

Looking ahead, Professor Kwan plans to leverage artificial intelligence-based technologies in collaboration with experts and scientists to further advance Chinese medicine formulations and develop novel exosome-based targeted delivery systems to improve the therapeutic outcomes of obesity and its comorbidities.

Through her innovative and integrative approach, which bridges traditional Chinese medicine and modern biomedical science, Professor Kwan advances the development and internationalisation of Chinese medicine, elevating its role and status within contemporary medical science.

Navigating innovation with Chinese medicine's wisdom

Professor Li Min, Ma Pak Leung Endowed Professor in Innovative Neuromedicine

As the global trend of population ageing becomes increasingly pronounced, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s have emerged as significant threats to human health. These conditions not only affect patients but also impose a heavy burden on families, society, and healthcare systems. In the face of this challenge, Chinese medicine (CM), with its unique holistic philosophy, syndrome differentiation and treatment, and preventive focus, is being integrated with modern, evidence-based Western medicine. Through innovative research and development, this powerful fusion promises to enhance personalised treatment outcomes and improve the quality of life for elderly patients.

At the forefront of this movement stands Professor Li Min, Dean and Chair Professor of the School of Chinese Medicine at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). A scholar with profound expertise and a track record of exceptional research in neurodegenerative diseases, she was appointed in 2024 as the “Ma Pak Leung Endowed Professor in Innovative Neuromedicine”. As a pioneer in integrated Chinese-Western medicine treatments for these conditions, her work not only advances the modernisation of CM but also provides fresh perspectives on health management for our global ageing society.

A looming crisis of age-related chronic diseases
Global demographics are undergoing a dramatic shift. According to the World Health Organization, the number of people aged 60 and above has exceeded one billion and is projected to reach 1.4 billion by 2030, accounting for one-sixth of the world’s population. In Hong Kong, the situation is even more pressing: the Census and Statistics Department predicts that by 2043, those aged 65 and above will comprise 36% of the city’s population. This signals not only increasing labour shortages and strains on pension systems but also a surge in chronic non-communicable diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

The pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases is highly complex, making drug treatment extremely challenging. Existing treatments primarily focus on symptomatic relief, offering no cure and often accompanied by significant side effects. “Patients with Alzheimer’s gradually lose the ability to care for themselves and require round-the-clock nursing,” Professor Li states. “As population ageing intensifies, the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is likely to rise further, creating an urgent need to develop new drugs that can slow the disease’s progression.”

Fusing CM’s essence with pioneer novel therapies
Convinced that only innovation can break the therapeutic deadlock, Professor Li leads her research team in a dedicated effort to validate the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicines for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Her approach marries CM principles with modern pharmacology, uniting traditional wisdom with molecular biology – most notably the mechanism of autophagy – to forge new pathways for treatment.

“Autophagy” is a vital mechanism for maintaining cellular health in the human body. By degrading and recycling damaged or old components, it promotes cell renewal, combats ageing, defends against invading bacteria and viruses, and enables cells to survive harsh conditions like hypoxia or starvation. When this process falters, it can give rise to neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, diabetes, and other conditions. Therefore, developing small-molecule autophagy modulators holds immense potential for treating a wide range of human diseases.

In 2016, Professor Li and her team successfully developed a novel autophagy modulator derived from Chinese herbal medicine. It works by clearing pathological protein aggregates, delivering both preventive and therapeutic benefits for neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. This discovery secured multiple patents and was published in several prestigious international academic journals, earning widespread acclaim. In 2021, the team achieved another milestone with the development of “NeuroDefend”, a new CM formula for Alzheimer’s treatment. Built upon modified versions of the classical prescriptions “Huanglian Jiedu Decoction” and “Yuanhu Zhitong Powder”, and enriched with complementary herbs, this formula was shown in experiments on mice to significantly reduce Alzheimer’s-related pathological protein deposits in the brain and effectively improve cognitive function and memory.

In 2024, the team’s work was honoured with a silver medal at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. Building on this success, Professor Li achieved further milestones in 2025: not only was she selected for the Hong Kong Scholars Program, securing funding to develop new Chinese medicines for ageing-associated neurodegenerative disorders, she also led a joint research team in obtaining a RMB 3 million grant under the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macau Science and Technology Programme (Category C) to conduct preclinical studies on the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. These accomplishments further affirm the international recognition of the School of Chinese Medicine’s research excellence.

From heart to brain: a mission-driven transformation
Less known is that Professor Li’s research journey began in cardiovascular diseases. Her doctoral work focused on the pathological mechanisms and drug interventions for cardiovascular conditions, with neurodegenerative diseases lying far outside her scope at the time. However, a clinical encounter in 2002 dramatically altered her academic trajectory.

Professor Li recalls, “A patient who had suffered from Parkinson’s disease for over 15 years came to me for treatment. After three sessions of CM therapy, the patient’s symptoms showed significant improvement.” This case generated widespread attention within the Hong Kong Parkinson’s Disease Association, leading more patients to seek treatment from her. Faced with their trust and expectations, Professor Li felt a profound sense of responsibility. She realised the vast unmet need in neurodegenerative diseases and that CM might offer hope for these “incurable” conditions. Driven by this mission, she resolutely shifted her research focus to neurodegenerative diseases, embarking on an exploration spanning more than 20 years.

Since then, Professor Li has dedicated herself to finding novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, yielding remarkable results. In 2007, she was conferred the Award of Distinguished Female Chinese Medicine Practitioner by the China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She was the sole Hong Kong recipient that year. In recent years, she has been listed repeatedly among the world’s top 2% of scientists by Stanford University, highlighting her influence in the international academic community. In 2024, she was honoured as the “Outstanding Scholar of the Year” at the 6th Brain Science and Chinese Medicine Conference. In April 2025, she assumed the role of Dean of the HKBU School of Chinese Medicine, becoming the first female dean since the School’s establishment.

The Ma Pak Leung Endowed Professorship: honour and responsibility
Among her numerous accolades, the appointment to the “Ma Pak Leung Endowed Professorship in Innovative Neuromedicine” stands out as particularly distinguished. This is a high honour that HKBU bestows upon scholars, affirming Professor Li’s research achievements and societal contributions. She expresses her sincere gratitude to Ma Pak Leung Company Limited for generously endowing this professorship, noting that this support not only encourages her personally but also helps HKBU to enhance its research capabilities, expand the frontiers of neurological medicine, and promote the innovative development of CM in Hong Kong. “I will continue to lead my research team,” she says, “dedicating ourselves to advancing CM for the treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, driving innovation in neuromedicine, and making positive contributions to human well-being.”

In the short term, Professor Li will focus on studying the neuroprotective effects of CM and translating innovative drug discoveries into clinical applications to benefit patients sooner. In the long term, guided by the principles of precision medicine, she aims to explore the deep integration of CM with modern neuroscience, foster international collaborations, and collectively address the health challenges posed by global ageing.

Whole person wellness: nurturing body and mind
Professor Li’s vision extends beyond personal achievements. In addition to promoting research translation, as a devoted educator she pours her heart into cultivating the next generation of CM practitioners, ensuring that the discipline’s torch is passed on. With rich clinical experience, a robust research foundation, and exceptional teaching abilities, she has steadfastly maintained an equal commitment to research, clinical practice, and teaching over her 24+ years at HKBU. She has spearheaded the development of multiple undergraduate and postgraduate CM programmes, and her own clinical cases involving Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s patients serve as invaluable teaching materials, particularly in neurodegenerative disease modules.

Professor Li firmly believes that outstanding CM professionals require not only technical proficiency but also scientific acumen and humanistic compassion. This philosophy is reflected in her daily teaching and extends beyond the classroom. For instance, as an avid long-distance runner herself, she actively organises students’ participation in events such as the HKBU Marathon. She hopes to cultivate endurance in herself and her students through the rigours of running — an essential quality for achieving research breakthroughs and overcoming clinical challenges. Also, passionate about writing, Professor Li contributes regularly to newspaper columns, viewing creative expression as a vital means of intellectual reflection and self-improvement. These hobbies sustain her endless motivation amid demanding research and teaching responsibilities, propelling her forward along the scientific path.

She summarises, “I adhere to the principle of holistic development, imparting professional knowledge and skills while nurturing students into research-capable and practice-oriented talents. For excellent educators and professionals, maintaining sound physical and mental health is the bedrock of sustained innovation.”

Chinese medicine hospital launches a new stage for clinical research
With Hong Kong’s first Chinese medicine hospital commencing phased operations from December 2025, the local CM sector will usher in unprecedented opportunities, heralding a new chapter in its development. “The Chinese medicine hospital is poised to provide an expansive platform for pioneering neurological medicine research, offering a standardised and systematic environment for clinical studies and new drug trials targeting neurodegenerative diseases.” Professor Li states, “This will accelerate the research, development, and clinical translation of innovative Chinese medicines.” Furthermore, the hospital will serve as a clinical training base for CM students and practitioners from three local universities. It will also recruit local and overseas experts to promote Chinese-Western medical collaboration, advance interdisciplinary research, and enhance treatment efficacy and outcomes.

As Dean of HKBU’s School of Chinese Medicine and the Ma Pak Leung Endowed Professor in Innovative Neuromedicine, Professor Li is committed to seizing this historic opportunity. She will remain steadfast in her pursuit of excellence across research, teaching, and clinical practice, seamlessly integrating CM’s people-centred, prevention-first philosophy with cutting-edge precision medicine. The ultimate goal is to deliver comprehensive, personalised integrative treatment solutions for patients, thereby benefitting humanity worldwide.

Philip K.H. Wong Foundation Endowed Professor in Chinese Medicine - Geriatric Medicine

					Professor Peng Bo

					Appointed in 2025

Professor Peng Bo, a renowned clinical expert in Chinese medicine, obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree in integrated Western and Chinese medicine from Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, and currently serves as Professor of Practice at the School of Chinese Medicine of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Born into a distinguished family of Chinese medicine practitioners, Professor Peng inherited his family’s medical knowledge at an early age and later studied under a variety of mentors, achieving a remarkable synthesis of Chinese and Western medicine. With more than three decades of experience in the clinical practice, teaching, and research of Chinese medicine, he has developed a particular expertise in geriatric medicine and complex internal disorders.

Regarding his academic research, Professor Peng focuses on vascular health, airway health, delaying ageing (longevity studies), and emerging respiratory infectious diseases, with a particular focus on geriatric diseases. He believes that Chinese medicine, with its long history, has accumulated profound theoretical knowledge and practical experience in addressing ageing and maintaining wellness, health and longevity for the elderly, making it an invaluable intellectual heritage for humanity. He advocates for the Chinese medicine health concept of “fulfilling one’s natural lifespan” (養其天年), conducting in-depth research into the fundamental nature and characteristics of human ageing processes and population ageing in Hong Kong, as well as the methods for maintaining physical health, longevity and a youthful physique.

In terms of professional services, Professor Peng believes that the essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) lies in treating illnesses and saving lives, and when a condition is deemed incurable, it reflects a lack of proper technique. He also emphasises the importance of TCM thinking, which values observation, listening and smelling, inquiry and palpation; focuses on the core pathogenesis; and prioritises the safety and flexibility of medication use. Professor Peng has been personally involved in frontline treatment during outbreaks of major infectious diseases, including SARS, avian influenza and COVID-19, saving countless lives while also accumulating rich academic and clinical experience.

Leveraging on his expertise in respiratory medicine, Professor Peng has demonstrated his strong passion for public service. During the pandemic, he collaborated with other experts to explore the potential of Chinese medicine, led the formulation of the Hong Kong Novel Coronavirus Infection Chinese Medicine Diagnosis and Treatment Plan (《香港新型冠狀病毒感染中醫診療方案》), helped to establish a telemedicine centre at HKBU to develop and promote remote medical consultation services, and personally treated patients at the Kai Tak Community Isolation Facility using Chinese medicine geriatric and warm disease theories. He also compiled relevant clinical cases and published the monograph Selected Medical Cases of COVID-19 (《2019冠狀病毒病醫案選粹》), which offers invaluable references for the prevention and treatment of epidemics and geriatric diseases in Chinese medicine, as well as for the development and care practices at The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong.

In terms of scientific research achievements, Professor Peng and his team have developed and launched a new drug and obtained two invention patents. He has also received four research accolades from the China Association of Chinese Medicine and provincial/ministerial-level bodies, published four academic monographs and more than 60 journal publications. He has been a member of several national-level Chinese medicine teams and has led and participated in national and provincial projects funded by the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Development Fund, the National Basic Research Programme of China (973 Programme) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Professor Peng holds positions in several professional associations, actively contributing his insights and experience to advance TCM. Dedicated to promoting the integration of Chinese and Western medicine, he has played a pivotal role in establishing a high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centred medical system.

In recognition of his outstanding clinical performance and dedication to Chinese medicine, Professor Peng was honoured by HKBU as the Most Admired Chinese Medical Practitioner (最美中醫) in 2022 and with the School Performance Award in Service in 2024.

Ma Pak Leung Endowed Professor in Innovative Neuromedicine

					Professor Li Min

					Appointed in 2024

Professor Li Min is a distinguished scholar, clinical expert and educator who has worked in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for nearly four decades. She is currently the Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM), Programme Director of the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biomedical Science programmes, and Director of the Mr. & Mrs. Ko Chi Ming Centre for Parkinson’s Disease Research at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Medicine from the Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and her MPhil degree in Chinese Medicine from the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. She further obtained a PhD degree in Cardiology from Tokai University School of Medicine in Japan.

A faculty member of SCM since 2001, Professor Li focuses particularly on elucidating the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VD), and also on the discovery of new drugs related to these diseases from TCM.

One of Professor Li’s recent research projects explored the relationship between neurodegenerative diseases and autophagy, a cellular metabolic mechanism involving encapsulation and degradation of excessive or damaged proteins and organelles. This is one of the key pathological mechanisms in AD, PD and other neurodegenerative diseases. Regulating the autophagy-lysosome pathway (ALP), particularly through the activation of transcription factor EB (TFEB), is thus a promising approach to treat AD, PD and other neurodegenerative diseases. In screening and identifying TFEB translocation activators, Professor Li and her team successfully identified a novel TFEB activator from a series of curcumin derivatives in TCM. This small molecule is found to be effectively promoting the ALP-mediated neuronal autophagy in cellular and animal models of AD. This research finding demonstrates the potential of these novel TFEB activators as therapeutic agents for AD.

In addition, Professor Li is committed to conducting rigorous randomised controlled clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of TCM in treating AD and PD. By combining TCM wisdom with modern molecular biology, such as autophagy, and pharmacological approaches, Professor Li aims to enhance the understanding of TCM principles and promote the application of Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

As a leader and educator, Professor Li has developed multiple courses on Chinese medicine for undergraduate and postgraduate students by integrating the concepts of TCM with modern medical practices and drawing on her extensive clinical experience in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases as well as cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. Through giving specific guidance, she aims to cultivate a group of TCM practitioners who can effectively apply the principles of TCM syndrome differentiation and treatment in their future careers, thereby promoting a holistic approach and patient-centred healthcare system.

Over the years, Professor Li has presented and published more than 400 papers about research and clinical findings on neurodegenerative diseases in internationally renowned journals, professional books and at international conferences, a publishing reputation that exemplifies her outstanding academic achievements. As of the end of 2023, Professor Li has been awarded more than 20 patents related to the treatment of AD and PD.

Professor Li has garnered numerous awards and accolades in recognition of her outstanding achievements in research, teaching and medical practices. In 2007, she was conferred the Award of Distinguished Female Chinese Medicine Practitioner by the China Association of Chinese Medicine. In 2012, she received the SCM’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work, and in 2013 and 2018, she received HKBU’s President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching. She also received HKBU’s President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Research Supervision in 2024.

The University held the Inauguration Ceremony of Endowed Professorships on 24 August to confer Endowed Professor and Endowed Associate Professor titles on four distinguished scholars and acknowledge the tremendous support of their respective donors. This year, the University introduced the category of Endowed Associate Professorship to the Endowed Professorships Scheme to expand the level of support and enable more aspiring scholars to conduct top-tier research. It also marked the first time that a charity foundation endowed more than one Professorship.

The three Endowed Professors and the Endowed Associate Professor are (in alphabetical order of discipline):

			(i) Cheung On Tak Endowed Professor in Chinese Medicine
(Endowed by Cheung On Tak Charity Foundation)
     Professor Jia Wei

(ii) Vincent V.C. Woo Endowed Associate Professor in Chinese Medicine
(Endowed by Vincent and Lily Woo Foundation)
      Dr. Han Quanbin

(iii) Dr. Hung Yeung Pong Wah Endowed Professor in Film and Television
(Endowed by Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation Limited)
       Professor Man Shu Sum

(iv) Dr. Hung Hin Shiu Endowed Professor in Music
(Endowed by Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation Limited)
       Professor Johnny M Poon

Officiated by Dr. Clement Chen, GBS, JP, Chairman of the Council and the Court, and Professor Roland T. Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor, the ceremony was well attended by University members and guests. To express our gratitude to the respective donors, the University presented a souvenir plaque to each donor, including Ms. Annie Cheung and Mr. Gavin Cheung, representatives of the Cheung On Tak Charity Foundation; Ms. Cindy Wu, representative of the Vincent and Lily Woo Foundation; as well as Mr. Billy Hung and Ms. Elizabeth Hung, representatives of Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation Limited. The three Endowed Professors and the Endowed Associate Professor were presented with certificates of appointment.

In his welcome address, Professor Chin expressed his deepest gratitude to the enormous support of the donors who shared the same vision and enthusiasm as HKBU. He said, “To bolster our capacity, our University builds interdisciplinary research laboratories and invests in people, in particular through the Talent100 Initiative. The Endowed Professorships Scheme is essential for enlarging and enriching our global talent pool. With the crucial funds provided by the Scheme, I am certain that our first-class scholars will develop and discover still more novel solutions that will make impactful contributions to society and the world at large.”

An Endowed Professorship is among the highest honours to be bestowed upon prominent academics at HKBU in recognition of their accomplishments. Established in 2006, the Endowed Professorships Scheme provides remarkable opportunities for visionary donors to partner with the University in advancing ground-breaking research and academic excellence in their chosen disciplines for the betterment of humankind. To honour the establishment of each Endowed Professorship, the University presented to each donor a specially made commemorative Ming Dynasty style chair as a token of our appreciation and a remembrance of their partnership with the University.

Professor Zhang Hongjie joined the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in 2011. Currently serving as Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) at SCM, he has been bridging traditional Chinese medical practices with cutting-edge scientific research. Graduating from the Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences with a Doctoral degree in 1994, Professor Zhang subsequently carried out post-doctoral research at the University of Illinois Chicago’s College of Pharmacy.

Throughout his career, Professor Zhang’s key focus has been on the integration and modernisation of Chinese medicine, especially through the phytochemical investigation of traditional medicinal plants.

His specialisation in developing novel anticancer and antiviral therapies from medicinal plants has considerably advanced the development of Chinese medicine. His groundbreaking work involves utilising a rigorous approach to the phytochemical investigation of traditional medicinal plants, uncovering potent compounds such as miliusanes, cyclopeptides and arylnaphthalene lignans, and bolstering their therapeutic potential as antitumor and antiviral lead molecules. His development of a high-throughput antiviral screening system has been instrumental in testing the efficacy of compounds against significant viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, HIV and influenza viruses.

Professor Zhang has made significant contributions to the global pool of medicinal chemistry with his discovery of more than 500 novel molecules. In addition, Professor Zhang and his team have evaluated over 5,000 plant extracts, identifying numerous extracts with potent biological activities that contribute significantly to the field of natural drug development. His research findings have secured more than 40 patents in major markets worldwide, thereby enhancing the commercial potential of his research findings.

His scholarly contributions, comprising more than 190 peer-reviewed journal articles, many of them in high-impact journals of his field like the Journal of Natural Products and the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, highlight the relevance and profound impact of his work within the scientific community. Furthermore, Professor Zhang has successfully secured multiple General Research Fund (GRF) grants and substantial funding from both the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) and the Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF). These funds have been crucial in advancing his research and fostering an environment at HKBU rich in scientific inquiry and innovation. Professor Zhang also actively engages in knowledge transfer with his entrepreneurial venture in Hong Kong, Gihon Biotech Limited, which bridges between traditional remedies and modern scientific applications by producing cosmetic products formulated with small molecules derived from traditional Chinese medicine.

Professor Zhang is committed to deepening the exploration of natural products’ therapeutic potentials, integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance the efficiency of drug development. His active participation in a variety of research and education related advisory and executive committees helps to play a crucial role in shaping the policy and curriculum of Chinese medical education. Moreover, Professor Zhang has demonstrated his leadership in fostering international collaborations and knowledge transfer, thereby significantly boosting the international stature of HKBU and the broader field of Chinese medicine. His proactive involvement in filing patents for new medical technologies and knowledge transfer agreements illustrates his commitment to advancing research and development within the biomedical sector. In 2017, Professor Zhang was honoured by HKBU with its President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work in recognition of his contributions to the academia and his leadership in research.

Professor Zhang’s exceptional contributions to the biomedical sciences and education have garnered him considerable global recognition. Notably, he has been listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University for four consecutive years, from 2021 to 2024. This prestigious acknowledgement recognises his significant impact in the field of natural drug discovery.

“Chinese medicine has been used for several thousand years in the prevention and treatment of illnesses, making a significant contribution to public health and the world’s medical science. It is still widely practised in the modern world and sheds light on diseases that are difficult to cure at present. Through the establishment of this endowed professorship, it is hoped that more innovative and significant research related to Chinese medicine can be conducted at HKBU. I believe the integration of this ancient wisdom with modern medical science will create notable benefits for humanity.”
